He had just been tossed out of the Hilton hotel for not paying his sizable bill, and was broke.
But when he got up in front of "The Money", he pitched like Koufax in a groove. He fielded questions like Gingrich on steroids. He bullshited like a Miura in his pen. Boetticher deserved two ears and a tail for his performance that night. A few days he got tossed in the 'pen' for his earlier performance at the Hilton.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15701076702713811632noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1731205886273509424.post-87921041365132467422011-06-07T09:13:31.061-07:002011-06-07T09:13:31.061-07:00Incredible story - the man was mindboggling. I only remember some clips of him in his later years when he ate himself to death, sitting in a restaurant, huge as a blimp, mumbling over a plate of something to the person interviewing him. A man larger and more everything than anyone else in every way just doesn't fit. LRH was that way and he didn't fit but he tried to change the nature of man and has changed individuals and is still doing it long after his departure. I guess Orson didn't have much outside the first dynamic to look at, with his surging genius and energies he just was in a constant fight with himself to satiate all the dynamics within fighting each other.

When are you returning to Flag?
LDSledge (ldsledge@ldslege.com) Tell your lady I send my regards.ldsledgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10225794506190243675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1731205886273509424.post-85392194546227052572011-06-06T17:08:29.185-07:002011-06-06T17:08:29.185-07:00Amazing article.

He relates how he answered the question to a student he was teaching at the University of Mexico:

I said to him, "Wouldn't it have been a wonderful thing if the director of The Agony and the Ecstasy had Michelangelo instead of Charlton Heston?"
I had my own private genius for eight years, who did what I wanted, stood where I asked him to, walked out in the sun to be in the light, and fought the bulls to the best of his ability right in front of every one of my cameras. You don't get that very often in a career.hcbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06033241135488804071noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1731205886273509424.post-18992569856314742752011-01-07T18:40:10.111-08:002011-01-07T18:40:10.111-08:00Wow, one of the best blog posts I've read in q...Wow, one of the best blog posts I've read in quite a while.

Budd's story (along with the decades-long vanishing act of the mighty 7 Men From Now) adds a special weirdness to his films, making them seem even more incredible.

Thanks for the post. I got to shake hands with Mr. Boetticher and tell him how much I enjoyed his work during the retrospective at the Museum of the Moving Image in 2000. He happily signed "When In Disgrace" for me while promising that the follow-up -- "Where Are the Elephants?" -- would be coming soon. I'm wondering now if it will ever see the light of day.Temple of Schlockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16054224371623000524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1731205886273509424.post-84495339378598545342010-12-19T02:28:58.836-08:002010-12-19T02:28:58.836-08:00Too slow Dan.
